“A&M Grill, founded by Charlie R. McAdams, Sr., has been in business at the same location since 1947.

Charlie was another one of Warner Stamey’s (Greensboro Stamey’s) barbecue protégés. Charlie started working with Warner Stamey in the 1940s. Charlie was supposed to go to Lexington and open a branch restaurant for Stamey. Instead Charlie came to Mebane and opened his own small business called The Log Cabin. In 1947, Charlie was running a service station that had a small kitchen area, a few booths and some bar stools. From his tiny kitchen Charlie began selling his delicious barbecue.

The chopped barbecue is a moderately coarse chop that tastes as if it were sauced in the kitchen with Eastern Carolina vinegar-base sauce and then a Lexington-style dip ladled on top. The ’cue is very moist and tender. The outside brown mixed with the inside white produces a pungent woodsy flavor that gives this barbecue good balance, texture and taste.

The sliced barbecue pork is thick, tender slices of pork. It’s my favorite offering at A&M. It has a wonderful woodsy, nutty, smoky flavor that’s very tender like a pig pickin’. The sliced pork comes sauced in the kitchen with a tomato-base sauce. It’s slightly twangy but not hot. It has kind of a sweet and sour taste and is a nice partner with the sliced ’cue. The pork has an exceptional deep, rich taste that can only come from cooking over live coals by someone who knows how to do it. In the immortal words of K.C. and the Sunshine Band “That’s the way, uh-huh, uh-huh, I like it. Uh-huh.””
