Starr Teal – Owner and Pit Master of Hubba Hubba Smokehouse is not your usual pit master. Starr did not come from a family that has cooked pigs for years. The typical story, granddaddy did it, daddy did it and now Star is doing it. Star is a graduate of France’s famed Le Cordon Bleu culinary institute. Star has cooked at top restaurants all over the world. Fortunately for NC, about twenty years ago, Starr decided to make his home in our beautiful mountains in the little village of Flat Rock.

Starr has a different approach to cooking with wood. He never lets the fire in his ovens go out except when his place is closed for the winter. Hubba Hubba opens for business in March and closes at Christmas. When Starr fires the pits in March they are fired 24/7 until just before Christmas. Starr’s desire is to maintain a constant temperature around 200 degrees so he can cook low and slow and not have to chase the desired heat up or down.

Starr cooks chicken, pork butts, ribs and brisket. This wonderful low and slow smoked meat is complimented with Southern comfort food such as Hubba Hubba’s mouth watering baked beans, garden fresh salad, special cornbread and the list goes on and on. These sides are not your Mama’s country cooking. They are the creations of a Master Chef and Pit Master. Starr was also one of NCBS’s star (no pun intended) instructors when the cooking school was held in Fletcher, NC. He did the class on brisket. It was memorable.
